Wollongong Art Gallery provides workshops and activities for children aged 5 - 14 years during school holidays in January, July and October. Artist-run activities include experimentation and investigation of various media in a casual and fun environment.  

These workshops change regularly and sell out quickly, so book online early.​

CHINESE NEW YEAR PAPER DRAGONS (mixed media) for 5-8 year olds Skye Zaracostas – artist and educator 
Chinese New Year is a time when the Chinese community get together and welcome the new year with customs that shall bring good luck, good fortune, wealth, prosperity and happiness. This workshop will celebrate the Chinese New Year by making paper dragons. A fun and creative way of getting festive. 10am – 12 noon $22 + booking fee

KEN DONE’S SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE (painting) for 5-8 year olds Skye Zaracostas – artist and educator 
Ken Done is best known for his brightly coloured artworks of famous Australian landmarks. In this workshop children will be inspired by Ken Done’s Sydney Opera House paintings. They will paint their own Sydney Opera House using bright colourful brushstrokes. 1.30-3.30pm

WATERCOLOUR JELLYFISH (watercolour / mixed media) for 5-8 year olds Skye Zaracostas – artist and educator 
Dive into this under the sea watercolour painting workshop by learning mark making and experimentation techniques by using inks and food colouring. Children will use chalk crayons to add drawn imagery to finish this seascape. 10am–12 noon $22 + booking fee

MC ESHER TESSELATION DRAWINGS (drawing) for 5-8 year olds Skye Zaracostas – artist and educator 
Dutch artist MC Esher is well known for his graphic imagery. His drawings often show tessellations, using a shape or object in a repeated pattern and eventually turning into this into a new object. In this workshop children will create their own tessellation artwork by using templates or creating their own pattern. Colour will added in their chosen media. 1.30 - 3.30pm $22 + booking fee

3D ABSTRACTION (sculpture & painting) for 9-14 year olds Megan Langlands – artist and educator 
Using a coat hanger and a piece of panty hose, children will construct a obscure abstract form. They will learn a variety of construction techniques to form a solid base for their work. To finish, they will paint on their own designs to add another element to the sculpture. 10am – 3pm. Students must bring their own morning tea and lunch. $55 + booking fee.

PORTRAITS, PETS & PATTERNS (painting & mixed media) for 9–14 year olds Tania Maria Mastroianni – artist and educator 
This painting workshop will look at the work of Australian artist, Kathryn Del Barton. Barton’s portraits of people and animals are highly decorative, featuring many layers of patterns and shapes. Children will incorporate these decorative elements when creating their own portrait. They may also incorporate their family pets into this artwork. 10am –3pm. Students must bring their own morning tea and lunch

ART SMART is an introductory course for primary school children who want to improve their artistic skills through a range of fun and stimulating exercises.  ART SMART nurtures the exploration of individual creativity and expression through structured lesson plans outside the classroom context.  All lessons are taught by our specialist primary school art teacher.

​​A free fun tour through the Gallery designed for 3 - 5 year olds. Children will explore art works through story-telling, art making, songs and games with the Junior Art Trail team. The trail will end with a tea party in the Gallery’s toy kitchen, a chance for the children to play, interact and re-​fuel.

When: Second Friday of every month, 10 - 10.45am
Dates: 14 February, 13 March, 8 May, 12 June, 10 July, 14 August, 11 September, 9 october, 13 November & 11 December 2020
​Bookings essential: places limited to 12 children aged 3 - 5 years and their carers.
Morning Tea: 10.45 - 11.15am. This is not provided - please bring your own packed morning tea to have in the Gallery at the end of the tour.
